When Ms. Villanueva left on maternity leave, it’s safe to say we were all a bit sad at the temporary loss of a great teacher who left some pretty big shoes to fill. However, Ms. Buffen, her replacement, came right in and took charge of the classroom, making a name for herself and becoming a teacher we all know and love.
The Freshman Seminar teacher not only manages to keep her class engaged, but also realizes and utilizes their ability to succeed with hard work by planning lessons that are “relevant to their lives.” The University of Chicago and PACE University graduate hails all the way from Chicago. She was attracted to the school because of our hard-working students and faculty, and when a job opportunity opened up, she jumped right in.
Outside of the classroom, Ms. Buffen enjoys cooking and running, but when she wants to wind down from a busy day, she can usually be found curled up with the latest Sherman Alexie novel or watching a game of college football. In terms of music, a mix of oldies and new songs are more to her liking.
But overall, she is a true teacher at heart. She adores her new students and all she wants is to see them take ownership of their learning and find what they’re passionate about. Her students motivate her to do better in her own life, and her hard work motivates us to do the same.
